Akarua, Central Otago
Bannockburn, Central Otago: the beating heart of New Zealand’s finest Pinot Noir. Here, on the western terraces above the Kawarau River, lies Akarua. A wine estate of 52 hectares, with 34.5 hectares planted with vines, set amidst a spectacular mountain landscape. Since 1995, Pinot Noir has been cultivated here with great dedication and respect for nature.
Pioneer in Extremes
Bannockburn is not just any sub-region: it is the first and only one in Central Otago with an official Geographical Indication (GI). The vineyards are situated between 195 and 400 meters above sea level in an extreme climate: dry, hot, windy, and with little rain. Ideal for Pinot Noir with character. The soils are lightly alluvial – perfect for deep rooting and minerality in the wine.
